The birth of your baby is one of the most moving and personal moments you'll ever experience. At Opelousas General Health System Labor and Delivery, we're proud to be a part of so many of these special memories. Each year, more parents in our community choose us to deliver their babies. You’re both in good hands here.
Having a baby can be an overwhelming experience, and you're probably wondering what to expect when you're expecting. Deciding where to have your baby is an important part of that process. We'd like to invite you to take a personalized tour of our facility so we can answer your questions. You can also see what to expect from Labor and Delivery at Opelousas General, including:
We also recommend you pre-register before your big day by contacting admissions at (337) 948-3011. When you are in labor, please go to the third floor, "Women's Center" entrance, and go to the nurses' station.
Our medical staff has over 200 years of combined experience and our nursing staff has over 250 years of combined experience. Your labor and delivery nurses will work closely with your physician to ensure your specific birthing plan needs are met and that you are comfortable throughout your stay with us.
Our Labor and Delivery Center offers a warm, nurturing, healing environment for your baby's birth and your recovery. We have nine spacious Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Post-Partum (LDRP) suites as well as a pullout couch for your partner to room in. Each room features handsome wood rockers, state-of-the-art birthing beds, and contemporary headwalls that conceal necessary monitoring equipment. All healthy newborns and mothers room-in together 24 hours a day. Our Intermediate Nursery is available if complications arise in the health of mom or baby.
We offer a prenatal class series to prepare new and experienced moms and dads (and family members) for the new addition, including:

Breastfeeding not only provides your baby with important vitamins and nutrients, but it also serves as a wonderful opportunity for you to bond with your baby. We encourage a "Golden Hour" initiative, which emphasizes skin-to-skin contact with both mom and dad in the hour immediately following delivery. At Opelousas General, we're strong believers in breastfeeding. That's why we were chosen as one of four hospitals in the state of Louisiana and 90 nationwide to participate in a national initiative to promote breastfeeding, the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality's (NICHQ) Best Fed Beginnings Collaborative.
Our Lactation Consultant provides both prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding education, support and assistance. We also offer a breastfeeding warm line phone resource for answering questions once you've left the hospital. The warm line is available to ALL patients both prenatal & postpartal. The number is (337) 594-3804.
