Services We Offer

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Opelousas is the only hospital within a 45-mile radius to offer 3T MRI, providing a non-invasive approach resulting in exceptional imaging clarity, shorter scan times and more accurate data. Types of MRI's performed include:

  • MR Aortagram: MR Aortagram is performed within the 25-second breath-hold technique, after an injection of Gadolinium. This technique is rapidly replacing older invasive Angiograms, which require an overnight stay by the patient.
  • Brain MRI: Extremely high-resolution images of the brain are performed along with contrast injection, and are completed in approximately 30 minutes.
  • MR Myelography: MR Myelography is created using advanced MR Technology without the injection of dye. Opelousas General Health System remains a pioneer in this field in the state of Louisiana.

Computed Tomography (CT)

We offer three CT units-64/16/4-slice technology, which combines special X-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, appendicitis, trauma, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging-also called sonography-is a safe and painless procedure that uses sound waves to produce high quality images of various organ symptoms such as the heart, blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen & uterus. Ultrasound is also used for interventional procedures to help guide the radiologist during biopsies and various other procedures.

Positron Emission Tomography

Computed tomography (PET/CT) - a type of nuclear medicine imaging, the combined PET/CT scans provide images that pinpoint the location of abnormal metabolic activity within the body.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine uses very small amounts of radioactive materials to diagnose and treat disease. The amount of radiation in a typical nuclear imaging procedure is comparable with that received during a diagnostic x-ray, and the amount received in a typical treatment procedure is kept within safe limits.

Mammography

Mammography is a unique type of X-ray for the breast, which allows your physician to see a tumor before it can be felt. The procedure is quick and can be life-saving. We offer stereotactic mammography, which produces three-dimensional images of the breast.

Low Dose CT Lung Screening

Patients who qualify for this screening must:

  • Be age 50-77 and are currently smoking or have quit smoking in the past 15 years
  • Have no symptoms or signs of lung cancer
  • Have smoked an average of one pack per day for at least 30 years
    • To calculate the pack year (PY), multiply the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day (Packs) by the number of years (Years) the person has smoked.

Covered by most insurance companies. Provider order required. For scheduling or more information call OGHS Medical Imaging (337) 948-5127.

Convenient Locations

Opelousas's medical imaging facilities are conveniently located at the hospital's Main and South facility. Our main facility, the Dr. Gerald E. Posner Center for Women's Health, and our Lab are adjacent to our imaging facility, for quick and accessible care. At our South location, we offer similar outpatient imaging services (with the exception of 3T MRI) as our Main location, as well as Lab services.
