OGHS Cardiac Rehabilitation

Work With Experienced Experts to Improve Heart Function

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Opelousas General helps patients who have suffered a heart attack or have been diagnosed with heart disease or a heart condition, recover and return to a normal, active lifestyle. Cardiac rehabilitation includes a personalized program of exercise and diet, combined with education and counseling, all designed to help reduce the risk of future cardiac problems.

An interdisciplinary team of specialists, which may include physicians, registered nurses, clinical exercise physiologists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and rehabilitation counselors, designs a program that includes:

  • Medically supervised and monitored exercise – Allows a patient to increase physical activity and fitness, improving cardiac efficiency.
  • Education and counseling – Teaches patients about their condition and how to make lifestyle changes to improve their heart health. Programs and individual counseling are available to help patients stop smoking, improve their diet, lose weight, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and reduce stress.

The cardiac rehabilitation team is certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and our program is the only cardiac rehabilitation program in the region accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).
