Theresa Sue Kirkpatrick

Mendocino County Together Inspired Winter 2022

Mrs. Theresa Sue Kirkpatrick, affectionately known as “Sue”, graced the world with her presence on April 10, 1935. She was the oldest of three beloved siblings born to Benjamin and Francis Richard.

Sue was married to Gilbert Ervin Kirkpatrick, Jr. and together they embarked on a journey of love and family, raising six children: Trish, Trina, Tracie, Gilbert, Terri and Kris.

Sue’s heart, full of compassion and a desire to care for others, led her to pursue a nursing education from what is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Her passion for nursing came from her innate ability to care for people above all. She won people over with her kindness, and her willingness to always listen. Sue was never in a rush and was a warm and welcoming presence to all the new nurses that she helped to employ.

As Director of Nursing at Opelousas General Health System, Sue’s leadership was a beacon of excellence, setting a standard that inspired and guided future directors. Her extensive knowledge and hands-on experience on the frontlines made her an invaluable asset, earning her admiration from her fellow nurses and administration alike. Her nurturing spirit and gentle heart made it easy to care for her patients. She was a highly revered and respected nurse, known for her expertise, empathy, and exceptional level of devotion to her patients. Not only was she able to heal bodies, but she also uplifted the spirits of all who surrounded her as she was a devoted woman of faith.

For an astounding 47 years, Sue dedicated herself to serving others, embodying grace, kindness, and an infectious smile. Though she departed this world on July 6, 2023, her legacy continues to flourish in the lives of her six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Theresa Sue Kirkpatrick will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched and will endure a beautiful memory of compassion and dedication here at Opelousas General Health System.
