Dianne Celestine was born in Opelousas on October 9, 1941, to Joe and Mable Toussaint Lavergne. She was the second oldest of 14 children and learned early the values of compassion, responsibility and resilience that would define her character. She was raised in Opelousas. In 1959, she proudly graduated from J.S. Clark High School. It was during these formative years that Dianne’s unwavering commitment to caring for others began to blossom, she received her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certification in 1976 from T.H. Harris, which is now South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) in Opelousas. She married Henry Celestine in 1960 and together raised two children: Cheryl and Kevin.

Dianne’s professional journey at Opelousas General Hospital began in 1963, where she started in the Dietary Department. Over the years, she undertook various roles, including Nurses’ Assistant and Ward Clerk, before ultimately achieving her Licensed Practical Nurse certification in 1976. Her latest role, which she retired from in 2018, was a Unit Secretary/LPN on the Progressive Care Unit (PCU).

Everyone knew Dianne throughout the hospital. Her work ethic was incredible as was her commitment to doing a good job and getting every task completed in a timely manner. Dianne rarely took time away from work and was known for her outstanding dedication. Her work family, physicians and other allied health professionals that worked with Dianne highly respected her, as she tried to make each day better.

Outside her professional life, Dianne was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her. Her love for fishing, cheering on the Saints, and spending quality time with her family were just a few of the passions that brought her immense joy. Many people did not know that she was a member of an adult softball league. She enjoyed sports and the outdoors. Most importantly, she loved attending the events that involved her children and grandchildren.

Dianne succumbed to her courageous 20-year battle with cancer on April 23, 2018. She leaves behind her children Cheryl and Kevin, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
