Opelousas General Health System (OGHS) will Paint the Town Pink (PTTP) in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. OGHS and OGHS Foundation invite the community to participate in the campaign which provides education and awareness of breast cancer.
The public kick-off event is scheduled for Friday, September 27, from 9AM – 3PM at OGHS Main Campus front entrance. Paint the Town Pink t-shirts will be on sale, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center will have their Prevention On The Go (POGO) bus on-site providing breast cancer education, and Second Harvest Food Bank’s Makin’ Groceries food truck will sell fresh produce at discounted prices. Other refreshments will also be available for sale.
Louisiana is slightly above the national average in number of women diagnosed with breast cancer. However, the percentage of Louisiana women who are diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer is well above national norms. Early education and access to screening is the most important factor to improve survival rates.
2024 marks the 17-year anniversary of PTTP, which includes a fundraising initiative with OGHS Foundation and its sponsors. Funds raised support eligible uninsured patients by providing mammograms and other health care services at Opelousas General Main Campus, Posner Center for Women and OGHS Imaging.
The 2024 theme is “Planting Seeds of Hope” and OGHS asks the community to wear a PTTP t-shirt or something pink every Friday in October.
