Pediatric Services
Opelousas General Health Systems offers a wide range of services and care for our area’s youngest patients, from newborns to age 18. Our pediatric staff includes doctors and nurses with pediatric expertise, providing quality care with the extra dose of kindness and compassion a child who doesn’t feel well especially needs.
From emergencies to surgeries to illnesses, we have the expertise to treat a variety of conditions including:
Respiratory illnesses
Musculoskeletal problems – such as fractures with consultaion available for rehabilitation purposes right here in the hospital.
Gastrointestinal illnesses
Infections
Pre and post surgical care for minor surgeries including, but not limited to, appendectomy, cholectomy, fracture repairs, debridements, minor burns, etc.
Sickle Cell Disease – Treatment for sickle cell sometimes includes blood transfusions, which our nursing staff is trained and capable of performing accurately on our Pediatric patients.
Diabetes
Our 10-bed unit is designed to allow staff to care for and monitor your child closely. As an inpatient unit, we have full access to the state-of-the-art services and expertise your child needs to get better, including diagnostics (radiology and laboratory), respiratory treatments, such as nebulizers, IV medications and wound care specialists. Each room is equipped with a cardiopulmonary monitor that is centrally monitored for the care and safety of our Pediatric patients.
Child- and Family-Focused Care
We’re focused on making your child’s stay in the hospital as comfortable as possible. We know that means parents too. That’s why all our rooms are private, equipped with either a cot or pull-out sofa bed for a parent spending the night, and a bathroom and shower.
We communicate closely with parents to help you understand what’s involved in your child’s care and team with you to help reduce any fears your child may have about being in the hospital.
Wellness Shot Clinic
Children ages newborn to 18 can receive low-cost immunizations at our Shots for Tots Clinic on the third Saturday of March, June, September and December. The Shots for Tots clinic is located in Auditorium A & B on the 3rd floor of the hospital. We provide childhood immunizations, as well as flu and meningococcal vaccines. The cost is $10 per child, not to exceed $30 per family.
